Microsoft Technologies Predicted to Dominate Enterprise Application Development vs. Java, Linux, Other Rivals: Research 2.0 Report

June 13, 2007; 01:48 AM
Research 2.0, a research firm that specializes in the analysis of emerging software technology for the investment and business communities, today revealed findings from its May Technology Monthly report focused on Microsoft technologies such as Silverlight and .NET and their potential to dominate future enterprise application development.

The report also covers findings on the SOA adoption progress in various industries and predicts that SOA will become a mainstream technology by 2015 with significant SOA packaged revenue occurring within the next decade.

Summary of May 2007 Report Findings

Not your grandfather's .NET

Microsoft has made significant advances with .NET and other related technology with its Vista-driven technology improvements. Microsoft .NET technology provides developers with the ability to quickly build, deploy, manage, and use connected, security-enhanced solutions with Web services. In this report, .NET is noted as now having striking advantages compared to other platforms, such as open-source LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).

The new client software battle royal: Vista vs. Apollo vs. Open Source

Major vendors are again making major investments to capture market share in the client software space. Microsoft's Silverlight technology, a framework that provides rich applications to the Internet browser, is compared to competitor Adobe Flash and Dreamweaver. According to the analysis, the latest offerings from Microsoft are compelling and will help fuel some market share gains versus Flash and AJAX.

SOA is dead, long live SOA

SOA adoption is likened to that of client-server revolution and the report claims that SOA is following the normal historical path of technology adoption. The report predicts that users will keep experimenting with SOA during the next few years, peak in 2010 or 2011, and then become embraced as mainstream technology by 2015. SOA packaged applications are also predicted to dominate application market revenue flows within a decade; setting the stage for a new market disruption for major application providers Oracle, SAP and Salesforce.com. The report also reveals that the services industry is leading SOA adoption progress and both portal- and infrastructure-based approaches to SOA developments are being explored by all industries.

Stock updates: MEMC, AT&T, 3Com

Research 2.0 revisits MEMC, AT&T and 3Com as stock stories. It remains confident regarding MEMC and AT&Ts upside, but has diminished conviction around 3Com.

Adoption Watch

The report finds that Skypes Mothers Day promotion largely failed to generate a significant increase in network activity usage. Skype had run a promotion that allowed free SkypeOut calling to any worldwide land-based line from the U.S. and Canada. Beyond Skype, the Web 20, Second Life and top Linux distributors are also analyzed with regard to their adoption trends.
