The Mozilla Foundation announced that
the final version of Firefox 2 will be available for free download on
Tuesday afternoon U.S. Pacific Time. The new version of the world's
second most popular web browser features a number of improvements,
including better tabs management, support for JavaScript 1.7,
spell-checker and anti-phishing technology.

A build of the new Firefox surfaced a
day earlier than expected on an official FTP server, and the link to
the purported "Firefox 2 Final" download appeared on major social
websites, only for the practice to be denounced later by Mozilla.
Representatives of the development team stated that linking to
earlier builds of the browser is essentially doing the Mozilla Foundation a disservice.
Firefox 2 Final comes a week after its
arch rival -- Microsoft's Internet Explorer, celebrated the official
release of its seventh iteration. The percentage of Firefox users has
been rising steadily ever since the release of Firefox 1.0 in
November 2004. Firefox is said to have hit nearly 250 million
downloads so far, according to various sources.
