jQuery, one of the top contenders for the unofficial title of Best JavaScript Library, has been officially announced v.1.0.  The new release is so large, it will take several days to roll out, and it will be accompanied by a redesign of the project website at jQuery.com.

"A lot of work has gone into this release," said jQuery creator John Resig. "A lot of bugs fixed, a ton of new features, and a complete overhaul of how the jQuery development process is run." jQuery 1.0 has been released nearly one year after it was first conceived as a post in John Resig's weblog.

jQuery is already widely used across the web, either for powering major Web 2.0 websites, or coding purely whimsical JavaScript applications

jQuery aims to JavaScript coding fun by "taking common, repetitive, tasks, stripping out all the unnecessary markup, and leaving them short, smart and understandable".  The whole framework is about 10K in size.

The project website provides access to downloads, documentation, the jQuery blog, and showcases.
