Web developer Jonathan Schemoul has unveiled a way to easily create image slideshows by utilizing the power of JavaScript libraries Moo.fx and Prototype.  The free GPL-licensed script is easy to set up and works on all modern browsers.

Two images in mid-transition.

The author said the method is a viable alternative to Flash, when showcasing a product on a website, with the added bonus of having fully standard compliant web pages. The slideshow script performs a cross-fading effect on a succession of images, and offers various options for customization.

Setting up the script is a matter of adding a few lines of code to the <head> and <body> sections of the HTML document.  Additionally, some CSS and JavaScript tinkering may be required if the user needs the default settings tweaked.

Two examples a provided: a showcase mode (transitions happen at the click of button), and a timed mode.  The project's webpage, with source code available for download, is located at http://smoothslideshow.jondesign.net/.
