Social Browsing Application Me.dium Integrates Jabber XCP’s Presence CapabilitiesDecember 4, 2007; 06:12 AM DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jabber, Inc. today announced that Me.dium, Inc. is utilizing the Jabber Extensible Communications Platform™ (Jabber XCP™) for presence and instant messaging (IM) capabilities in its social browsing application. Launched in August, Me.dium is a social browsing plug-in that allows people to see what other people are doing online around them and to interact in real time. By revealing this new Social Exploration EnvironmentTM (SEE), Me.dium graphically connects users with others doing similar things, allows them to browse with their friends, and enables users to interact with others in their real-time community—similarly to how one interacts with people in the real world. Me.dium’s unique and interactive approach to social browsing lets web users communicate in more meaningful ways, significantly enhancing their online experience by delivering an unprecedented contextual component to the browsing experience. “Jabber’s scalable, real-time messaging and presence infrastructure allows us to focus our efforts on our own extended-presence technology,” said Peter Newcomb, chief technology officer of Me.dium. “Jabber XCP’s server architecture provides the flexibility we need as we grow and improve our users’ ability to interact with each other in the online world.” When a user in the Me.dium network moves from one website to another, the server receives a notification that the user’s location has changed. This information is aggregated across the Me.dium network to seek similar content based on the browsing activity of other Me.dium users. Me.dium streams the data back to the user’s browser and displays a map showing who is currently on that recommended content and offers an opportunity for users to initiate one-to-one or group chats, add new users to private chats, post messages to the online community, and follow each other around the web. “A growing number of companies understand the value and complexity of adding presence and messaging to existing applications and services,” said Paul Guerin, chief executive officer of Jabber. “These companies, like Me.dium, are choosing to focus on their core competencies and are turning to Jabber for presence-centric solutions. Jabber’s scalability, highly available architecture, security, multi-protocol support, and extensive programming interfaces are the key reasons for adoption of our technology.” Me.dium is a Windows® Marketplace “Recommended Add-on for Internet Explorer” (http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=388&tabid=1) and is a CNET “Webware 100” Award winner (www.webware.com/100).
