Komodo IDE Demonstrates Advanced Code Management and Development Capabilities

July 27, 2007; 03:26 AM
ActiveState, the leading provider of tools and services for dynamic languages, released a case study today at OSCON in Portland that highlights how Second Story Interactive Studios, a Portland-based studio that creates innovative user experiences, used Komodo IDE to simplify a complex code management and development project.

Komodo IDE is a multi-platform, multi-language integrated development environment (IDE) for dynamic web development.

Second Story was recently tasked with creating Arago, an online database for the National Postal Museum that would amass their collection of over 300,000 objects and present them in a user-friendly interface. With elaborate data import scripts to translate data from a third-party collection management tool, all the logic involved in managing researcher contributions, and the website itself, it was a large and complicated project.

I found out about Komodo at OSCON 2005 and was very impressed by what I saw; it was the perfect tool for the job, said David Brewer, a web application developer with Second Story who specializes in building back-ends and HTML interfaces for collection database websites.

Komodo offered Brewer and other developers at Second Story syntax highlighting and syntax checking that made it easier to spot typos before they turned into bugs, while the debugger tracked down more subtle problems. The code browser and bookmark features simplified locating code to reference and jump back to it as needed, and, using the Perl interactive shell for quick hacks and testing and creating regular expressions with the Rx Toolkit, made development faster as well. Project management features also proved invaluable.

Komodo solved so many of the problems we struggled with when using less capable tools, said Brewer. Developing Perl in Komodo IDE was an absolute joy compared to our previous approaches.

ActiveState is featuring Komodo IDE, the developers' tool of choice at Second Story, at OSCON.
