Progress Software Releases ObjectStore 7

June 27, 2007; 03:24 AM
Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), a global supplier of application infrastructure software used to develop, deploy, integrate and manage business applications, today announced the availability of version 7.0 of the Progress® ObjectStore® Enterprise platform.

The ObjectStore Object Database Management System (OODMS) is a field-proven technology used for developing reliable, high performance storage environments for managing complex data. It is an object database for Java and C++ applications that connect to existing enterprise and relational database systems and can cache data in order to deliver performance for users at in-memory speed.

This latest release of ObjectStore allows the developer community to build object oriented applications using the latest development environments and standards. It will also allow them to monitor and manage their runtime environments using newly introduced system management tools.

Theres a movement afoot to provide flexible application deployment and integration using services-oriented architectures (SOA) and grid-based computing environments, said Carl Olofson, Research Vice President, IDC. Such architectures and environments require facilities that can support the sharing and management of in-process data in a scalable and recoverable way. Traditional database environments, which are perfectly appropriate for transactional and business intelligence data management, lack the flexibility, scalability, and speed required for in-flight data management by a grid-based component-oriented and virtualized world of integrated applications and business processes. Whats needed is a comprehensive standards-based data management and processing platform that can seamlessly support the managed data sharing needs of these new environments.

Key enhancements to ObjectStore 7.0 include:

  • A new system management tool that controls and reports on executing ObjectStore processes. Based on the latest AJAX technologies, this web-based console allows database administrators using ObjectStore-based applications to monitor and manage system processes to achieve the highest levels performance and reliability.
  • JDK 5 development support to complement existing JDK 5 runtime support. Developers will now be able to use language features that are in JDK 5 such as Generics, Enhanced For Loop, Autoboxing/Unboxing, Typesafe Enums, Varargs, Static Import, and Annotations.
  • Support for new platforms and compilers such as Microsoft Windows Vista, Visual Studio .NET 2005, and Red Hat Linux 4.0 32-bit.

Many of our customers have been using ObjectStore technology successfully for years, however their requirements have evolved, said Ken Rugg, vice president of data services products, Progress Software. ObjectStore 7.0 addresses both the business and technological evolution, with particular attention on delivering a high performance cache system for SOA environments.

Rugg continued: ObjectStore Release 7.0 is a major release with numerous new features coupled with unrivaled scalability and performance. Additionally, a seamless transition path has been designed so that the many hundreds of applications developed using ObjectStore can be upgraded easily.

Progress ObjectStore Enterprise version 7.0 is available for ordering and shipping now. Additional information about ObjectStore can be found at www.progress.com/objectstore.
