Terracotta and Webtide Team Up to Cluster Jetty, Cometd

May 10, 2007; 03:12 AM
Terracotta, Inc., a leader in innovative solutions for enterprise Java scalability and Webtide, the key developers of Jetty, the popular open source Java web container, today announced the integration of several key open source technologies. The integration of Terracotta POJO and Terracotta Sessions with the Jetty Java application server and the Cometd HTTP-based event routing bus ties together key technologies of emerging open source application stacks, which will further the adoption of application infrastructures built on lightweight open source components. Terracotta and Webtide will continue to collaborate to provide organizations with alternative approaches to proprietary, monolithic suites.

Terracottas JVM-level clustering simplifies enterprise Java by enabling applications to be deployed on multiple JVMs, yet interact with each other as if they were running on the same one. This runtime clustering infrastructure ensures high availability without compromising scalability and radically reduces the time and effort associated with deploying a clustering solution. Jetty, an open source and full-featured web server, enables developers to instantiate a Jetty container as an object, instantly adding network and web connectivity to a standalone Java application. Cometd is a scalable HTTP-based event routing bus that uses a push technology pattern known as Comet.

"Webtide, home of the main developers behind Jetty, and Terracotta have brought together an exciting combination of the open source web container and clustering technology, said Jan Bartel, chief engineer for Webtide. We look forward to having users explore this technology to really scale their Java and Ajax applications."

The growth of the Jetty user base validates the demand for alternate approaches to application infrastructures, said Ari Zilka, chief technology officer and founder of Terracotta. By providing the Jetty community with a drop-in clustering solution to support highly available applications, Terracotta and Webtide will further accelerate its rapid adoption in 2007 and beyond.

This announcement extends Terracottas mission to support the leading open source components. In addition to Jetty and Cometd, Terracotta also integrates with Lucene, the #1 high-performance, full-featured text Java search engine; RIFE, a full-stack web application framework; Struts 1, a flexible control layer based on standard technologies like Java Servlets, JavaBeans, ResourceBundles and XML; Cglib, a powerful, high-performance code generation library; and iBATIS, a popular object-relational mapping framework.
