Software AG announced enhancements to crossvision Application Designer, a run-time environment that uses AJAX to create sophisticated Web-browser interfaces as part of a Service Oriented Architecture. Version 2.1 of the company's Application Designer (formerly named Composite Application Integrator) now includes Generic Web Service support, WYSIWYG layout capabilities and a powerful HTML editor/word processor through Software AG's recent alliance with pintexx.

The announcement was made at the Gartner Application Integration and Web Services Summit.

Software AG's crossvision Application Designer accelerates design and deployment of rich Internet Applications (RIA) that use the AJAX pattern (Asynchronous JavaScript + XML). With Application Designer, desktop-like capabilities can be enabled for the browser without requiring developers to code complex JavaScript, HTML or CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

Once applications created using Application Designer are designed and tested, they can be rapidly deployed on a broad range of Java application servers, including Tomcat, JBoss, IBM Websphere, BEA Weblogic and others. Each application can be immediately accessed - both through a browser and as a Java SWT (Standard Widget Toolkit) client.

Last year Application Designer was announced as the first AJAX-based product to include a user interface control for Google maps (www.maps.google.com). Seamless interaction with Google maps is one of more than 80 AJAX graphical controls shipped with Application Designer. These controls improve the speed and convenience of developing composite applications. Enhancements to version 2.1 of Application Designer include:

-- Generic Web Service Support - enables Web applications for Web services, including page creation and service testing;

-- Additional layout capabilities - design and maintain layouts faster and more intuitively with new WYSIWYG preview window, including drag & drop and move/insert controls;

-- AJAX based HTML editor/word processor - offers familiar word processing tools and customizable features for HTML text editing and control. For details about pinEdit 5.0 from pintexx, which provides this capability, visit www.pintexx.com.

"Thanks to the rapid popularization of AJAX, people are able to create highly functional applications in completely new and simple ways," said Dr. Peter Kuerpick, Member of the Board, Software AG and responsible for the development of crossvision. "The combination of our crossvision Application Designer and Application Composer sets a straight course directly from a Service-Oriented Architecture to the hands and eyes of the individual employee with a vital job to accomplish."

The company recently joined the OpenAJAX Alliance, whose mission is to advance the adoption of AJAX. Software AG is also an Add-In member of the Eclipse Foundation.
