Remember the Million Dollar Website? A similar approach is now used by Geepix -- a new-wave attempt at creating online directories, with a twist.

Geepix is an Ajax (Asynchronous Javascript and XML)-driven service that lets webmasters link their site to a small part of an image, hosted at Geepix.com.  Each image is divided by a 50x50 grid, and consists of a total of 2,500 linkable blocks per image.

In its current state, Geepix is divided into 14 categories, from Arts to Sport.  On the front page each category is represented by a thumbail of a larger picture, which is displayed in full size on the respective category page.  Each large picture is divided into 2,500 separate blocks, measuring 20x20 pixels.  The "Computers" category is an image of, you guessed it, computers, "Reference" is a picture of an old book rack with lots of books, and so on.

Placing a link on Geepix costs $10.00 per image block per year.  The site operates on a "First Come, First Served" basis.  Geepix provides user statistics, as well as a simple interface for bookmarking links.

A demonstration of the concept is available at www.geepix.com/demo .
