Google Unveils AJAX Calendar Service

Search giant Google expanded its range of services with another free-web based application.  Google Calendar, launched today, allows users to plan their activities and share schedules with others.  It is available at google.com/calendar .

There are quite a few calendar and planning services on the web, and Google's take on online calendars offers the best of that field: drag-and-drop functionality, user-friendly interface, and attention to sharing.  Those are things one would find in existing web applications like CalendarHub and AirSet.

The technology behind the new service is the ever-present these days combination of JavaScript, XML, and RSS. Additionally, it uses  ''natural language processing'', which allows users to enter events in plain text (think "dinner tonight at 9 pm with Jane"), and the service automatically translates that into a schedule entry.

Google Calendar allows easy integration with its mail service Gmail.   Reportedly the new application will  be easily synchronized with other web calendars, as well  as mobile and PC software.

The interest in Google's new offer peaked shortly after it was announced, causing brief interruptions of service.

We at JSS love Google as much as the next guy, and still it feels good to know their servers are susceptible to mortal weaknesses.
