You know it was bound to happen.  After online applications for editing text and graphics were released, video remained one of the few areas on the web where AJAX technology has not been applied.  That changes with the launch of Eyespot's public beta: the Web2.0 approach to video (http://www.eyespot.com).

Eyespot is a web service, which allows users to upload and mix short video files, up to 25 MB in size.  Additionaly, it contains features for managing and sharing movie collections.

The Eyespot MixerThe Eyespot Mixer is a user-friendly way of arranging digital media onto a timeline sequence and creating new videos.  Individual movies can be trimmed and cropped, and sound is easily added to the mix.  "...Make it an art form. Experiment", says Eyespot.  Users can upload their own videos, or take them from a public archive.  One interesting feature is the ability to upload videos from phones via MMS.

Eyespot also provides the tools for building communities around the service: video blogs, "eyespot groups",  and media sharing.

Registration is free.  The registration process provides the option to fill a new account with sample media from various sources, including independent record labels.
