Keynote Bridges the Gap Between Web Site Developers and Operations With New Test and Measurement Environment for Recording the Performance of Rich Web 2.0 Sites

October 30, 2007; 10:17 AM

SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Keynote Systems (Nasdaq:KEYN), the global leader in on-demand mobile and Internet test & measurement solutions for continuously improving the online experience, today reinforced the companys leadership position with the introduction of the industrys most advanced and accurate Internet testing environment for recording and measuring the performance of Web 2.0 applications at all stages of the lifecycle. Keynotes Internet Testing Environment (KITE) is a desktop-based console that enables developers and testing professionals, from their own desktop, to test and measure the end-user experience of next generation Web applications including AJAX-based applications and asynchronously downloaded content. All transactions recorded via KITE can also be deployed on the new Transaction Perspective® 8.0 and Application Perspective 5.0 measurement computers which utilize Keynotes global test & measurement network (see separate press release issued today for more information about the enhancements).

KITE is designed to bridge the gap between developers, testing professionals and Web operations teams by including an embedded version of the Transaction Perspective 8.0 and Application Perspective 5.0 measurement software in the KITE console. For the first time ever, Web application developers and testing professionals now have point and click access to a consistent testing and measurement platform using Keynotes True Experience technology for the entire application lifecycle. KITE is the ideal Web application testing and development workbench because it enables Web developers to execute rapid performance analysis and validation as if it was provisioned on the Keynote external Web monitoring infrastructure directly on their desktops. This significantly reduces the script validation time and enables Web developers to fix application code before sending it into production.

Furthermore, through more accurate visibility into the performance of Web 2.0 applications, Web operations teams can more precisely pinpoint the location of a problem and provide context to the development team regarding application errors identified in production. Additionally, KITE allows users to:

  • Detect page completion automatically for asynchronous content (programmed in AJAX);
  • Record and script specific critical elements and events;
  • Group and categorize measurements with a customizable user interface;
  • Utilize industry-standard JavaScript as the Web transaction scripting language; and
  • Download transaction times, page level network content details, and order/dependency details through Keynotes on-demand performance diagnostic tool.

Web 2.0 technology introduces new challenges to the IT Operations world of delivering performance and availability for Web applications, particularly in the context of managing continuous change due to perpetual release of software, said Milind Govekar, research vice president, Gartner, Inc. It is particularly important that the various IT silos of Development, QA and Operations work together collaboratively to address these key challenges introduced by Web 2.0 technologies as it is too late and expensive to deal with them purely in the production phase. For organizations faced with increasing pressure to reduce the development cycles of complex Web applications, pro-actively incorporating and analyzing performance metrics during the development and testing stages reduces the risk of poor performance when these applications are deployed. This enables IT organizations to use the same set of performance metrics throughout the lifecycle of the application.
