MindTouch announced the release of MindTouch DekiWiki, a commercial open source wiki based on open standards. MindTouch said it is the only vendor to offer a complete open source, hosted and appliance-based wiki solution.

DekiWiki is based on MediaWiki -- the engine that brought Wikipedia to the masses. Released under the OSI-compliant GNU General Public License (GPL), it is the first application to take advantage of MindTouch Dream, the only open source Web 2.0 API for Microsoft .NET and Mono. Dream combines the service-oriented architecture (SOA) use of Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), Lucene and XML, allowing the distribution of both data and behavior.

Featuring a WYSIWYG interface, DekiWiki features WYSIWYG interface, allowing anyone to create and edit web pages and share information in a contextually rich environment. Accessible through common web browsers, DekiWiki supports features like page hierarchies, file attachments on any page, indexing and searching.

DekiWiki, its complete documentation and MediaWiki upgrade details are available to the development community at www.OpenGarden.org.

"The more companies embrace open source, the more everyone benefits from accelerated innovation and transparency," said Steve Bjorg, president and CTO of MindTouch. "Open source should be an integral part of a company's DNA and not an afterthought or a means to an end, which is why we are releasing DekiWiki to the open source community in advance of widespread commercial availability."

MindTouch has also introduced a private label version of DekiWiki available to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) looking to provide hosted wikis for companies that need a reliable and secure co-location solution.

Earlier this month, MindTouch announced the general availability of MindTouch Managed Office Server (MOS), an on-site wiki appliance designed to meet the information management needs of small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs).
